Speed Test

Ascentive's Internet speed test shows you the actual download speed of your Internet connection. It is calculated by your own web browser (using JavaScript) based on the time it takes to download a sequence of random characters to your PC.

Why is my effective speed less than it should be?
This download speed is usually less than the rated bandwidth speed of your Internet connection, because not all of your connection's bandwidth is usable. When data is sent over the Internet, it is first broken down into pieces (data packets) before it is sent, and then later reassembled at the other end. Transfer time is not just based on your connection's bandwidth, but also on how efficiently these data packets are handled (routing paths and the sizes of the packets). Windows makes decisions about how to transfer these packets; these choices are usually not ideal, resulting in unnecessary slowness. For example, how big should the packets be? If they are too large, and a packet is missing, it can take too long to resend that missing packet, slowing down your connection. If the packet is too small, a greater percentage of the packet is taken up by the packet address "header", which means each packet contains less useful data, also slowing down your connection because more packets then need to be sent.

What else slows down my connection?
There are other settings that can affect your overall connection speed. When data is sent between your PC and another PC, the data packets are numbered, and they often arrive in the wrong order. The PC will use the packet numbers to put the data back together in the correct order. What happens if an expected packet is missing? If your computer waits too long to ask for a missing packet of data to be resent, your Internet connection will stall and your applications will sit there waiting for data to arrive. If your computer requests missing packets too quickly, unnecessary duplicate packets could flood your Internet connection, also slowing it down.

How can ActiveSpeed fix all of this?
Unlike other Internet boosters, ActiveSpeed is an easy-to-use, patent-pending software program that will maximize the usability of your Internet connection, giving you enhanced download speed and responsiveness. It automatically adjusts various settings on your PC by determining the best group of settings that maximizes your Internet speed the way YOU want it to perform. You can tell ActiveSpeed that you want your downloads to be as fast as possible (maximum kilobytes per second) or as responsive as possible (minimum ping time) and ActiveSpeed will adjust your PC accordingly. Likewise, if you want optimal improvement in both download speed and responsiveness, ActiveSpeed will adjust your PC to achieve that as well. ActiveSpeed can also be used together with compression-and-caching technology provided by many ISPs to accelerate your dialup connection, and it works for both dialup and broadband connections, whether you already have an Internet accelerator or not. Try it today - if you aren't amazed at what you see in ActiveSpeed, you don't pay anything. Get started and begin downloading in 5 minutes.

Here is our take on various connections

Cable - Speeds vary dramatically 1-5 Mbps - plus there can be a serious slowdown due to congestion from too many users. Accelerator software can help increase web speed with various optimizing routines. Many cable companies offer a special combined deal with cable TV and internet access together. Usually you have the same IP number unlike dialup modems where you are usually assigned a different number every time you connect. So with cable, you usually have less anonymity and more security risk as your internet connection is on constantly and hackers are more able to easily zero in on your constant IP designation.

DSL - Various setups 1.4+ Mbps. The speed can also fluctuate depending on the distance from the central connection switch. With cable connection slow-down a growing problem, many users are seeking a good DSL provider.

ISDN - Dual-channel is 128 Kbps. Single-Channel is 64Kbps. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) includes integrated services to help speed up fax delivery, etc.

56K Dialup - Usually much less than 56Kbps. Dialup speeds vary by the quality of the phone line and the many different user configurations. You can connect to your ISP account from most computers. When you disconnect, you are truly disconnected unlike most always on high speed plans which pose somewhat of a security risk. Usually you will be assigned a slightly different IP number every time you connect providing some anonymity. Web accelerator software designed to boost your speed can really help with these connections.
