Mixed Opinions Over Texoma Candidate's Criminal Record

It's a controversial issue that's generated much debate in the City of Sherman. KTEN was the first to report about anonymous mailers being sent to voters and the media. It included a printout of a mayoral candidate's criminal record, including a DWI conviction ten years ago. KTEN's Katie Delaune spoke exclusively with Bill Magers Monday night in a one-on-one interview.

She has more on the story.

In recent years, voters have been bombarded with negative campaigning.

High-profile politicians like Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush have admitted to prior drug and alcohol abuse. While it may have hurt their image temporarily, they have been able to bounce back from it.

Last night, Magers talked about the DWI arrest and conviction, saying he served 2-years probation for the misdemeanor charge.

He says he's made no move to withhold the information, saying it's public record that can be easily accessed online.

To be fair, we looked up the mayoral candidates on the same website and could only find some speeding charges against Mayor Julie Ellis-Starr.

We asked voters if someone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor 10 years ago should be mayor.

We got some mixed answers.

“I think at some point no matter if it's 10 years or 15 years, it ought to be looked at. I think that if someone's got a criminal background, they shouldn't represent the public,” says Gene Johnson.

“I believe that everybody messes up at one point in their life and everybody should deserve a second chance,” Bill Rogers.

Last night, Magers said he is sorry about what happened in the past and feels that he has served his punishment.

He hopes voters weigh his entire character when they head to the polls.

Magers is running against incumbent Sherman mayor Julie Ellis Starr (pictured, below right).
