Worthington City Council spread "misinformation . . . full of spin and gross errors" about the proposed expansion of Don Scott Field, according to e-mails written by Ohio State University College of Engineering Dean William Baeslack.

Correspondence among Baeslack and other players in the University's push to expand its airport will be released to the public later this week by WOOSE (We Oppose Ohio State airport Expansion).

WOOSE received the correspondence and other documents from Ohio State University and the FAA through public records requests.

WOOSE president Dennis Hennen gave council a preview of what the records reveal at its Monday night meeting.

In correspondence written last fall, Baeslack, who will make his recommendation regarding expansion of the airport to the university board of trustees in June, wrote "misinformation is being provided by WCC (Worthington City Council) folks to MORPC" and "information provided by WCC, and their consultants, and WOOSE is full of spin and gross errors."

In September, Wes Butch of DLZ, the university consultant hired to study the impact of airport expansion, accused Worthington consultant David Zoll of making "wild claims."

In an October e-mail, which contains the phrase "not to be forwarded to Worthington," Butch stated that "Zoll knows well that having this turn into an EIS would be a victory."

An EIS is an environmental impact study, which is a thorough study of how the expansion would effect surrounding neighborhoods. The university has done a less complete study, which is now being rewritten, but city council has been asking for the more thorough study for more than two years.

The information received by WOOSE also include letters from corporations that use the airport supporting the expansion. According to Hennen, the letters show great similarity in wording.

"The letters also share one other theme," Hennen said. "A longer runway would result in these corporations using the airport more."

Other revelations are that DLZ seems to be recommending voluntary noise abatement, including phasing out louder aircraft and restricting night operations; and the FAA is requiring considerations of historic sites.
