CHARLEVOIX, Mich. State police say they're criminal background check system is going through an upgrade to be completed later this year.
Officials say the system also is now linked to a national criminal database.
The move comes after school officials in Charlevoix blame the system for failing to detect a convicted sex offender working in an administrative position.
Arthur Kirk was arrested last month on felony firearms charges after undergoing a fingerprint check. His prints matched those of an Arthur Kirkeby who has a long arrest record including sex crimes with children.
The 70-year-old Kirk legally changed his name 20 years ago in Ingham County.
The case has state school districts taking another look at their hiring procedures. |
