Alleged Online Sexual Predator Arrested
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Westerville police arrested a
man in a park Tuesday who was allegedly trying to have sex with an underage girl
he met on the Internet, NBC 4's Teresa Garcia reported.
Police had marked and unmarked police cars waiting for alleged sexual predator
Charles Blevins, 45, of Lancaster.
Blevins fled in his car when police approached him.
He was apprehended minutes later, Garcia reported.
"I don't know what I'm doing," Blevins said.
Police said he fled because he knew he was about to be busted for allegedly
trying to have sex with a 14-year-old girl he met online, who was actually an
undercover police detective.
"He was kind of suspicious, a little hesitant to want to meet to begin with. We
kind of anticipated a little bit of a problem," said one police detective.
"None of them, very few I should say, actually would admit they came with the
intent to actually have sex," said Detective Scott Dollison, of the Westerville
police department.
Police said they have chat logs and recorded phone calls to prove Blevins is a
sexual predator.
This is the 25th arrest of a suspected sexual predator for Westerville police
this year.
If convicted, Blevins will have to register as a sexually-oriented offender,
Garcia reported.
Parent Latosha Conner said the Internet can make parents nervous.
"I think with all the things that you hear, the different things kids can get
into online, it kind of makes you nervous," Conner said.
"Nobody got hurt and we got another arrest. So it's good for everyone," said one
officer.
Police said online supervision is an important defense to prevent children from
getting involved with online predators.
